Make Your Own Baking Powder

Baking powder is a leavening agent that typically contains a combination of an acid (cream of tartar) and a base (baking soda), along with a starch to keep them from reacting prematurely. To make 2 teaspoons of baking powder, you can use the following ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch

Here’s how to mix them:

  1. Combine the Acid and Base:
    • In a small bowl, mix 1 teaspoon of cream of tartar with 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. These two ingredients will act as the acid and base, respectively.
  2. Add Cornstarch:
    • Add 1/2 teaspoon of cornstarch to the mixture. The cornstarch helps to stabilize the combination of acid and base, preventing them from reacting prematurely.
  3. Mix Thoroughly:
    • Use a whisk or fork to mix the ingredients thoroughly. Make sure there are no clumps, and the mixture is well combined.

If you need more than 2 teaspoons of baking powder, you can double, triple, the recipe.  If you would like to make a big batch to store away for future use, use the same ratios as above, but use cups instead of teaspoons.
